1. Margaret Atwood & Bernardine Everisto win 2019 Booker Prize


The 2019 Booker Prize was awarded jointly to Canada’s Margaret Atwood (79-years) for 'The Testaments' and Britain's Bernardine Evaristo for 'Girl, Woman, Other'.


Atwood has become the oldest writer to win the award at the age of 79 years.


Margaret Atwood is the second women author (first woman- Hilary Mantel) to win the Booker Award twice (in 2000- for 'The Blind Assasin').


Bernardine Evaristo (won for Girl, woman, other) which follows the lives of 12 characters living in modern Britain.


The novel is told from three different women's perspectives, including Aunt Lydia.


Evaristo is the first black woman to win the prestigious Booker Prize since its creation in 1969.


This was the first time the prize was shared since 1992, despite a rule change banning joint winners.


Note:


The Man Booker Prize for Fiction is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original novel, written in the English language, and published in the UK and Ireland between October 2018 and September 2019.

2. Indian American Abhijit Banerjee bags Nobel prize for Economics




The 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics has been jointly won by Indian American Abhijit VinayakBanerjee (58-year), his wife, Esther Duflo (the French American) and United States Michael Kremer(professor at Harvard University) for their experimental approach to ‘alleviating global poverty’.


Currently, Mr. Abhijit Banerjee(taken American citizenship in 2017) and Esther Duflo (46-years) are professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US.


The prize amount of 9 million Swedish krona (Rs. 6,54,17,544) will be shared equally between the three Laureates.


They will receive the prize from King Carl XVI Gustaf at a formal ceremony in Stockholm on 10th December, (the anniversary of the 1896 death of Alfred Nobel).


According to The Nobel committee statement, In two decades, their new experiment-based approach has transformed development economics, which is now a flourishing field of research.


Know about Abhijit Banerjee:


Banerjee was born in Calcutta, India to Nirmala Banerjee (mother) and Dipak Banerjee.


He studied in South Point High School in Kolkata, West Benga.


Abhijit Banerjee was educated at the University of Calcutta (B.Sc.- Economics), Jawaharlal Nehru University (M.A. in economics) and Harvard University, where he received his PhD in 1988.


In 2003, he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with Esther Duflo and Sendhil Mullainathan, and he remains one of the lab’s directors.


Note:


The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences is an award for outstanding contributions mainly to the field of economics.


It could be awarded in other fields of social sciences, like political science, psychology, and sociology if they impact economic issues.


Laureates in the Memorial Prize in Economics are selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

3. Director Priyadarshan gets MP govt’s Kishore Kumar award




Noted director and produce Priyadarsha was conferred the Madhya Pradesh government’s National Kishore Kumar Samman for 2018-19 at a function in Khandwa (the birthplace of Kishore Kumar) MP.


Priyadarsha he has directed more than 95 films in various Indian languages (Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.


Kishore Kumar passed away on 13thOctober 1987 in Mumbai.


National Kishore Kumar Sammanhas been instituted by Madhya Pradesh Department of Culture, carries a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh and a citation.

4. 15th October: International Day of Rural Women




The International Day of Rural Women is observed across the world on 15th October to recognize the critical role and contribution of rural women.


The theme of 2019 is “Rural Women and Girls Building Climate Resilience”.


This year’s theme highlights the important role that rural women and girls play in building resilience to face the climate crisis.


Note:


International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce the achievements of humanity.


The first International Day of Rural Women was observed on 15th October 2008.

5. India's 'Missile Man' Kalam remembered on the birth anniversary




Today, The Nation pays homage to former Indian President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam (also known as the Missile Man of India) on his birth anniversary.


Mr. Kalam was born on this day on 1931 in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu.


An aerospace scientist Kalam's birth anniversary is also celebrated as ‘World Students' Day’.


Mr. Kalam served as the 11thPresident of India between 2002 and 2007.


He died in July 2015 at the age of 83.

6. Nitin Gadkari inaugurates conference on 'One Nation One Tag – FASTag' in New Delhi




Nitin Gadkari (Road Transport & Highways minister) has inaugurated a conference on ‘One Nation One Tag-FASTag’ in New Delhi.


The objective of the conference to roll out the process for having a unified electronic system across the country.


‘One nation, one FASTag’ rule to be implemented from 1st December 2019


Under this system the same FASTag affixed on the windscreen of a vehicle can be used to pay toll across all toll plazas in the country.


Note:


All the new cars that come with  RFID tag can have their Fastag activated and use it across all national and state highways of India.

7. India and Netherlands launch 2nd phase of LOTUS-HR for sewage treatment




India and the Netherlands has launched the 2nd phase of the Local Treatment of Urban Sewage Streams for Healthy Reuse (LOTUS-HR) program at Barapullah drain in New Delhi.


This project was launched by Minister of Science and Technology Harsh Vardhan and the Dutch Royal couple, Netherlands King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.


The Dutch Royal couple is on a five-day visit to India at the invitation of President Ram Nath Kovind.


The project aims to demonstrate a holistic waste-water management approach that will produce clean water which can be reused for various purposes.


The (LOTUS-HR) project was set up in 2017 at the Sun Dial Park here as part of a collaboration between the governments of India and the Netherlands.

8. Air India becomes the first airline in the world to use Taxibot on A-320 aircraft




Air India has become the first airline in the world to use a Taxibot on an A-320 aircraft with passengers on board.


Taxibot is a robot-used aircraft tractor for taxiing an aircraft from parking bay to runway and vice-versa.


It is a pilot controlled semi-robotic towbar-less aircraft tractor used as alternate taxiing equipment.


Ashwani Lohani (Air India Chairman and Managing Director) flagged off flight AI665 and it was carried to the runway using Taxibot at Terminal 3 of the Delhi Airport - to Mumbai.


Taxibots will be used for departing flights only.

9. ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav’ (10th edition) under the Ministry of Culture inaugurated in Jabalpur




Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Lalji Tandon & Minister of State for Culture and Tourism (I/C), Shri Prahalad Singh Patel jointly inaugurated the 10th Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.


The festival will showcase the cultural heritage of India through performances of art, folk music, dance, handicrafts and cuisines of Leh, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Punjab and West Bengal.


The National Cultural festival will display diverse forms of folk, art and culture of 22 states.


The concept of National Cultural Festival was conceived in the year 2015.

Ministry of Culture, Government of India is organising the 10th edition of Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav under the Ek Bharat Shrestha Bharat initiative in Madhya Pradesh (till 21st October 2019).

10. Bihar govt to disburse Rs 6,000 each to flood-affected families




Bihar government has taken the decision to provide assistance of rupees six thousand each to the flood-affected families.


This decision was taken in a meeting of the Disaster Management Department which was chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.


The amount will be transferred to the accounts of beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer.


Over seven lakh 22 thousand people of 15 districts including Patna, Bhagalpur, Nalanda and Bhojpur were affected by floods.

11. India, Japan to hold joint military exercise ‘Dharma-Guardian’ 2019




A joint military exercise Dharma-Guardian 2019 will be conducted between India and Japan at the Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School, Vairengte in Mizoram (from 19th October to 2ndNovember).


The Indian Army and the Japanese Ground Self Defence Forces (JGSDF), comprising 25 soldiers each, will participate in the exercise.


The exercise is an annual training event which is being conducted in India since 2018.


The scope of this exercise covers platoon-level joint training on counter-terrorism operations in the jungle and urban scenario.

12. Retail inflation spikes to 3.99% in Sep due to price rise in food items




As per Govt. data, Retail inflation spiked to 3.99% in September this year (3.70% - in Sep 2018) mainly due to higher prices of food items.


As per Government data, the consumer price index (CPI) based inflation was registered at 3.28% in August this year.


The price rise in the food basket was recorded at 5.11% last month, as against 2.99 per cent in the preceding month.


The inflation for vegetables shot up to 15.40 per cent during the month.

13. ICC changes ‘super over’ rule for all its major events




The International Cricket Council(ICC) tweaked the ‘super over’ rule for all its major events following the uproar over the outcome of the men's World Cup final in July when England were declared winners against New Zealand on boundary count.


As per new rule, in case of a super over tie, there will be a repeated super over until one team has more runs than the other.


In July this year, New Zealand and England had headed into the super over after scores in the World Cup final were tied at 241.

14. Priyanshu Rajawat claims men's singles title at Bahrain International Series




Indian shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat(17-years) claimed the men's singles title at the Bahrain International Series Badminton at Isa Town, Bahrain.


Rajawat beat top-seed Jason Anthony Ho-Shue (Canada) in the finals 16-21, 21-7, 21-12 in the summit clash.


Top-seeded Indian mixed double pair of Juhi Dewangan and Venkat Gaurav Prasad also finished at the top.


They defeated Thailand's Pannawat Theerapanitnun and Kanyanat Sudchoeichom 21-18, 21-16 in 34 minutes to bag the gold medal.


Indian men's doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Saurabh Sharma settled for the runners-up position.
